Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day
Through celebrating the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), Ada Lovelace Day aims to raise the profile of women in STEM, and in doing so, create new role models who will encourage more girls to pursue STEM careers.
To mark Ada Lovelace Day on 10 October 2023, we sat down with ValiRx preclinical project manager, Zai Ahmad, to discuss her experiences and the STEM landscape for women.

ValiRx and Inaphaea attend ELRIG
On 18-19 October, ValiRx and Inaphaea's Andrew Carnegie, Mark Treharne, Zai Ahmad, and Cathy Tralau-Stewart attended ELRIG's Drug Discovery conference, held at Liverpool's ACC Exhibition Centre.
There were some excellent talks, with a particular emphasis on the role of human disease models in drug discovery. Some highlights for the team included:
- A great session from Cancer Research Horizons, chaired by Stuart Farrow and Emma Carswell titled ‘Transforming cancer drug discovery’
- Insightful presentations on genomics in drug discovery from Slavé Petrovski (AstraZeneca) and David Michalovich (Independent)
- Discussions regarding the development of PROTACs from Kirsten McAulay, University of Dundee
- An excellent presentation on the challenges of antibiotics discovery & development from David Powell (LifeArc) which finished with an exciting announcement of the £30M AMR initiative fund
It was great to speak to fellow industry professionals and attendees who stopped by Inaphaea’s booth in the innovation zone.
University students complete placements at Inaphaea
In September, we welcomed two students from the University of Nottingham to undertake two-week placements within the lab. The students, Daniel Abegunde and Jozaine Fenton, received a hands-on placement experience working within Inaphaea’s new lab facilities in MediCity, Nottingham.
Both students were eager to learn about all aspects of working in the lab and were able to build on skills acquired during their degrees as they shadowed the Inaphaea scientists.
